What is the Sabbath? The word Shabbat, or Sabbath, primarily means “to cease or desist.” In relation to God, it pertains to the Creation. On the seventh day God was finished with his work which he had made, so he rested on the seventh day.… God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy (Gen. 2:2–3a).
